FiveEvil

As I mentioned ever so briefly here, back in the review of games played for last year, I have been involved in the playtesting of FiveEvil. This is a game based on the d20 system of the "fifth edition of the most popular TTRPG on the market", aka 5e. FiveEvil takes this base game that many people know and love, and modifies the system and rules to allow the game to work for a horror setting.  The game is currently under development through Handiwork Games . 5e is often used as a system to run any type of game. Mostly because it is the biggest game in the TTRPG space, and has therefore has the largest player base. However, any time the though of using 5e to run a horror game comes up online, this raises the hackles of the horror game community, as at its heart, 5e D&D is a heroic fantasy game where character  agency is front and centre, whereas horror games require putting that character agency on the back burner, and put them in situations where they do not feel in contr...

RPG a Day 2024: Day 3

Image
RPD a Day: day 3, Most often played game? Why is the often in bold? Is that to take emphasis away from the word played? Does a GM count as a player? If so, then the answer is by far Call of Cthulhu. Hands down, over the last few years since I got back into RPGs steadily in 2017, I've ran more Call of Cthulhu than any other game (over a hundred sessions), and I've ran more games than I've played. Now, if the word played is taken to mean only games where I am rolling the bones in front of the screen, then we need to go to the stats. These are not all games played in the last few years, but only the top hitters. Surprising me, is that both Heirs to Heresy and DCC beat out call of Cthulhu. Mothership also makes a good show for itself. 5e is up there in third, mostly due to playing through the Witchlight campaign. Numenera is in second place with a stunning 51 sessions played, and still going, but I'm very happy that top place goes to The One Ring, due to the masterful Dark...

A Year in Gaming 2023

Image
A Happy New Year to you all.  As is my wont, I tracked my gaming process throughout the year, and here we have the annual summary of events.  This last year saw a return to the GM seat, after the completion of a long running Witchlight Campaign where I played Beaghan, the Fairy Bard. This means I had a total of 23 sessions as GM, and 65 as a player. Slightly fewer sessions overall from last year, but still a great amount of gaming was done. One highlight was getting back round a table for face to face gaming on a regular schedule, at one point having 8 people round the table, as there are three of our group who do not like to play online. This has calmed down to a more manageable 6-7 regulars, which is still a good sized group, that allows us to continue even through some members being unavailable. It seems the time taken to build up the group has payed off. In terms of new games tried, there were a whopping 11 new games/systems that hit the table for me this year. Three of th...

Free RPG Day

Image
Last year, there were no stores in town that signed up for Free RPG Day . The nearest being across the border in Burlington, so I wasn't too hopeful when I went on to the website to look this year.  Thankfully, there were 3 stores in town who had signed up, and one, Ménard Comics , which I had never heard of before, is just across the bridge from us. I went along on the day, with the intention of getting the Kids on Bikes adventure supplement, however, the store I went to had not recieved any copies of that book, and it's not like they ran out, as I was there 5 minutes after opening. I'm a little put out by that, as that is really the one thing I wanted from this year's line up, but I guess I'll have to wait and see if they release the PDF. The good news is that I did get to pick up Outbreak Undead , which does look a little dice heavy, but I think we'll give it a go. I also got the DCC quickstart guide with 2 adventures ( 1 level 0 adventure and a Lv...
