A Year in Gaming 2025

Image
The year has come to a close, and as I have done for the last few years, I will review my gaming over the last twelve months. Overall, I managed a cool 88 session. This year, there were no extracurriculars, only my regular gaming groups. Games Played Of the games played this year, of course, the most sessions were committed to the One Ring. This has been a stalwart game since 2020, with 111 sessions under our belt to this point. We are nowhere near the end of the Darkening of Mirkwood (plus extras) campaign, but we're also in no rush to complete it. . The game I enjoyed most for system was Jackals . This is a BRP-like system that reminded me of the old Stormbringer in terms of character abilities, this really hit a nostalgia spot I was not expecting. The game was dropped for reasons of unwieldly lore for the GM to deal with. From there we moved to Black Sword Hack , which while much more Moorcockian in feel, is very far from the Strombringer RPG. Vaesen Form Fillable Character Sheet

I am looking to start a Vaesen campaign. This will be a novelty to me in two ways. One it's a new game to me, and secondly, I plan to co-GM this with another of the members of our Thursday gaming group.  We both want to run the game, but as with all games like this, we both also want to play. Moreover, Vaesen is a game where if you have read the adventure, you can't play it. More so that many other games. And the other co-GM had already read a bunch of the scenarios, and so can't play them. With that in mind, I will run through The Lost Mountain Saga , and they will run other, interweaving adventures. Vaesen will hopefully work well for this with The Society being great for this kind of troupe play. With that in mind, I set off looking for a Vaesen character sheet. There is one freely available on the Free League website , but it's kind of basic, and there are surprisingly few variants out there. It's also not form-fillable. So I made it so. RPG a Day 2024: Day 4

Image
RPG a Day, day 4: RPG with great art ? So we've gone straight from the objective to the subjective. From countable stats on games played to best art.  I am no artist, nor a great critic of art. As with most folks, I know what I like, and that's the sole criteria I'll be judging on here. If we want to go to the foundational works, it terms of foundational RPGs that helped me form my tastes, then there can be no other answer than MERP. With covers painted by the great Angus McBride, and interior works by Liz Danforth, these books cannot be beat. Not to mention those maps. These days, art has come so far from where it was in the beginning, to the point where we have whole RPGs that were based on artwork, like Tales from the Loop . It is in this vein that I choose Vaesen. Based on the artwork of  Johan Egerkrans , this is a world that I eagerly await diving into.
